Domains
A virtual or dedicated can “only” be communicated with a clearly ip address (IPv4 or IPv6). As it is hard to remember all of these various combinations out of numbers and letters, domain names can be used which can be more easily remembered and are being resolved to the appropriate target ip address by dns servers. SSL
It is neccessary often to encrypt the communication between the user and the server, especially when sensible data (e.g. payment data) are being transferred. This is made possible through ssl certificates that are being installed on the server. These are available for different types of usage: So for example you can secure your email traffic or HTTP/VPN connections to make sure that your data is being transferred securely.
